Ten Kate’s Dominique Aegerter picked the perfect time to take the lead in the second WorldSSP race in Navarre on Sunday, taking the lead and winning just before a red flag.
After leading the majority of the 12 laps of the race late, Steven Odendaal was once again content with second place on the track in northern Spain, Luca Bernardi winning a consecutive podium in third.
Simon Jespersen took the lead after a brief delay before the lights due to the poor position of two riders on the grid. A good start from Jules Cluzel was canceled after the Frenchman moved up from second to sixth, with Odendaal taking the lead at the end of the first lap.
A three-way fight began for third place as Bernardi, Marcel Brenner and Aegerter fought for position, with Saturday’s podium keeper coming under attack at the end of the second round before the move was confirmed in the next one. tower.
The drama saw Can Öncü, Randy Krummenacher and Hikari Okubo out of the race, the latter falling alone at Turn 15, with the former duo reuniting under investigation. Edwardo Montero Huerta was the next to fall, on the sixth turn, Galang Hendra Pratama pulling away six turns later as the attrition rate continued to increase.
Back in front and Odendaal extended his lead to over a second, now from Aegerter, as Caricasulo brought his new R6 into the fight in fifth position. Philip Oettl – the first of the non-Yamaha machines – sixth with Cluzel, Niki Tuuli, Brenner and Raffaele de Rosa completing the top 10.
Aegerter circled around the leader at the end of the seventh round, with six tenths now the gap to close with 13 to go, as Bernardi set to snatch a second consecutive podium, taking third place next time around.
The championship leader was briefly in command but the South African immediately fought back, the inseparable duo as the battle continued throughout the halfway distance.
The returning Italian had the podium in his sights halfway through, with Caricasulo closing in on Bernardi in the lead, easily knocking out the quickly fainting Jespersen, before the rider from San Marino accelerated to defend third place . Cluzel soon came into play as he began to challenge his former teammate for fourth place.
Aegerter took the lead with seven to go, but the Evan Bros. did not give up, two tenths separating the pair as the race drew to a close. A red flag flew with six laps to go after a major fall in the first corner for Borja Gomez, with Aegerter securing his eighth win of the season as Sunday’s podium mirrored that of the previous afternoon.
