“We were lucky in the last two races” – Francesco Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia has made considerable gains in the MotoGP World Championship with two victories in the last two rounds, placing third in the championship, 49 points behind leader Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) – who, like runner-up Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia ) He was unlucky on his side in these events.

Now it’s the Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring that is generally Ducati-friendly, but Bagnaia stressed he was not misled by past results and was aware there will be many motorcycles with competitive potential in Spielberg. Here is what he said at a press conference:

– It’s a good lead for us, that’s for sure. We have shown every year that our bike is very competitive. But looking back to recent races, there was more than one manufacturer up front. Last year I was fighting for victory with Marc [Marquez] and Fabio – we had a two-second gap before the rain arrived. And looking at the specs of all the bikes, I was losing time in sector three and gaining in sector four. Yamaha was gaining time in sector three, Honda was competitive like Ducati. For me this year all the bikes are ahead because as we have seen in many races every manufacturer can win. With the new fairing we also have less top speed. But in any case, we will see this weekend. I think we are in good shape and can fight to be in the lead again.

When asked if he thinks that with his form moment he can start a series of good results similar to what he did in the last part of 2021, the Italian replied: ‘I will try. I will try, above all, to gain points in this race. But honestly, we were lucky in the last two races because my main opponents had problems. It won’t always be like this, winning so many points was just because I was lucky in the last two races. But let’s see. Of course competing at the front is good, but I just want to think about my weekend and the sessions.
