MXGP was the first qualifying session to take place. When the door slid down, it was Team Great Britain’s Ben Watson who came out on top early on as he led Team Latvia’s Karlis Sabulis, Team Britain’s Benoit Paturel France and David Goosen from the Republic of South Africa.

Antonio Cairoli of Team Italy and Glenn Coldenhoff of Team Netherlands started further in the field in sixth and seventh position. Although Coldenhoff managed to get around the Italian to steal his position.

Watson then continued to lead as he widened the lead to 5.304 seconds over Sabulis and Paturel, as Team Canada’s Dylan Wright settled in fourth.

Goosen then dropped to eighth place as Coldenhoff got Wright for fourth place. The Dutchman then had Sabulis and Paturel right in front of him, as he was able to overtake the Latvian Sabulis for third place. Cairoli did the same, following the Yamaha rider.

Watson then set the fastest lap of the race continuing his charge in the lead, this time 10.034 seconds ahead of Paturel who was doing his best to keep Coldenhoff and Cairoli behind him. Coldenhoff and Cairoli struggled to get around the Frenchman for several laps.

After biting his time, Cairoli took third place ahead of Coldenhoff and then set his sights on Paturel for second. Shortly after, he managed to find a way around what unleashed the Italian crowd.

With four minutes and two laps to go, Watson was 8.117 seconds ahead, but that gap quickly narrowed as Cairoli charged in for the win.
