Newcastle United are reportedly keen to open a dialogue with Everton on the possibility of signing free winger James Rodriguez before the summer window closes.

The 30-year-old joined the Toffees on a free transfer last summer after breaking his contract with Real Madrid. The Colombia international has reunited with Carlo Ancelotti after the duo worked together at the Bernabeu.

But, after an indifferent season and the Italian’s exit, his future in Merseyside under Rafa Benitez is uncertain. The former Monegasque made 21 starts in 23 Premier League appearances last season.

He suffered a series of insignificant injuries and only showed a glimpse of his undoubted talent. A few clubs have been linked to South America in recent weeks.

It was believed that Ancelotti might seek to bring him back to Real. However, this was quickly put to bed, but only after the big man questioned his future.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,†he said on Twitch, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo. “I don’t know, I don’t know where I’m going to play. You know in football and in life you don’t know anything but all I know is that I trained hard, I prepared well, I trained and that’s it.

“It’s complicated. Everywhere I’m wanted. Someone has to be where they’re wanted.

And, answering a question, he said: “Are you going back to Real Madrid? No, I do not think so. It is a closed cycle that I will not repeat.

A move to St James’ Park seems unlikely but, according to the reporter from Fichajes Ekrem Konur, the Magpies are enthusiastic. They should talk to Goodison Park’s outfit about the player.

It is not clear whether the Tynesiders are seeking a loan or a permanent deal. But the fact that he is without a contract next summer means he could be gone for nothing in 12 months.

Everton won’t want that to happen as the ex-Porto man still has transfer value.

James will kick off Newcastle’s season

Newcastle are useless after two games, with a loss to West Ham United and, on Saturday, Aston Villa. They recently introduced Joe willock Arsenal on a permanent contract.

Mike Ashley is reluctant to spend too much money. It is therefore questionable whether a decision for James is realistic.

But he seems to have no future at Everton. After missing out on Day 1 victory over Southampton due to Covid-19 isolation, he is set to return.

But the man with 80 Colombian caps seems indifferent to the situation. Rodriguez recently admitted on his Twitch stream, “I’m going to start training on Monday, I think.

“On the weekends I won’t play, I don’t even know who is playing Everton, can you tell me? I think it’s far because the past was here at home.
